The On-Scene Coordinator is responsible for conducting emergency and non-emergency responses, inspections, investigations, and surveys related to hazardous materials, including chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosives (CBRNE). This role ensures compliance with applicable laws and regulations, initiates enforcement actions, and provides technical expertise to various agencies. The Specialist performs 24-hour emergency response to hazardous incidents, including hazardous spills and public health emergencies, while also participating in initiatives such as the Wellfield Protection Program, public safety measures, biological terrorism response, Birdwatch, the Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction (CWMD) program, and the United States Postal Service's Biological Detection System (USPS BDS) program.
Day in Life: A typical day may involve field investigations, compliance inspections, emergency response calls, training, exercises, and office work. You could be called to respond to a hazardous materials spill, collaborating with emergency responders to contain the situation and protect public health. On-call days may require you to adjust your schedule to address urgent incidents or inquiries, ensuring effective communication and rapid response. Throughout the day, you’ll communicate with community members, prepare reports based on your findings, and ensure that safety protocols are upheld.
